Future Movement hosts Liberal International in Beirut
Last weekend, the ALDE Party’s global sister organisation Liberal International gathered in Beirut, Lebanon upon invitation by local host party Future Movement (Al Mustaqbal). Under the broad topic of “Liberalism and Traditional Values: Defining a Winning Liberal Agenda in Today’s Changed World”, some 100 delegates from around the world got together to share best practice and exchange views on topical matters from how to best answer populist tendencies to regional politics in the form of discussions on Lebanon’s economic situation and the deteriorated state of affairs in neighbouring Syria.
The ALDE Party also did its part on the latter, when it convened a range of experts for a very useful discussion on Israel/Palestine relations on Sunday morning, notably including former Dutch Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Foreign Minister Laurens Jan Brinkhorst, former Friedrich Naumann Foundation coordinator in Ramallah, Dr. Hans-Georg Fleck, Foreign Affairs coordinator of the Liberal ALDE Group in the European Parliament (and former ALDE Party President) Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck and Lord John Alderdice, former President of Liberal International. The meeting was fruitfully facilitated and moderated by the ALDE Party’s Vice President Lousewies van der Laan.
This discussion will continue when the ALDE Party convenes for its Spring Council in Pula, Croatia on 10-11 May.
